The Golf Mk7 (from 2012) spans several engine generations, and on many TSI versions the water pump is not a standalone part: it is integrated with the thermostat housing. That integration is the number one reason well-meaning buyers order the wrong unit - the pumps look alike in photos and differ in exactly the details photos do not show.
Take the reference from the old pump or the dealer invoice before anything else. The OE number encodes the pump and its revision; a trailing letter can distinguish two pumps that fit the same engine but open the thermostat at a different temperature. If you only have a partial number, say so - a professional supplier will complete it rather than guess.
"Golf Mk7" is not an engine. The same car left the factory with different engine versions, and the pump follows the engine, not the badge. The engine code sits on the engine bay label and in the VIN-derived build data. Confirming the engine code takes one minute and removes most of the risk in this order.
Before committing, compare the housing material, the sensor ports and the connector type against the old part. Two visually identical pumps can differ in port layout, and a difference you discover after installation is a warranty claim, not a discount.
