Euro 7 is the next stage of the European Union vehicle emissions framework, agreed in 2024, and its first obligations for passenger cars arrive from late November 2026. What makes this stage different is not only tighter exhaust limits - for the first time, particle emissions from brakes and tyres enter the rulebook alongside what comes out of the tailpipe.
Under Euro 7, brake systems on new passenger-car type approvals will need to meet particle emission limits measured over standard driving cycles. In practice this pushes car makers toward friction materials and rotor coatings that release less dust, plus sensors and software that monitor brake wear more precisely. The direction was set years ago - coated rotors and low-dust pad formulations have been spreading across European platforms well before the deadline.
Workshops will see more coated brake discs, more wear sensors, and friction materials that behave differently from older formulations. For parts buyers, two things follow. First, application data matters more than ever: the same axle can move to a revised reference as platforms refresh. Second, packaging and catalogue labels need to keep pace, because distributors increasingly check that what is in the box matches the latest application listing.
When sourcing brake components for EU-market vehicles, ask whether the reference you are buying was updated for low-dust friction materials, and confirm the application range rather than relying on a photo. Keep a record of the OE number against every shipment - it is the cheapest insurance when a platform revision lands mid-year.
